Bank accepts Spitfire funds

Donations from the public for the Spitfire Memorial Restoration Fund are being accepted at all branches of the Westpac Banking Corporation. A spokesman for the Brevet Club, where the replica spitfire is sited, said yesterday that donations could also be posted to the club at P.O. Box 1434 Christchurch. The estimated cost of a replacement for the replica Spitfire, which was destroyed by fire on Saturday morning, is about $30,000. The spokesman said that this cost included fire-resist-ant materials.

The club was actively seeking funds for the aircraft which was a memorial to all air crew who served and gave their lives in any

conflict, said the spokesman.

The burnt model would probably be taken down tomorrow, he said. It would then be possible to determine whether any parts could be salvaged. The spokesman said that part of the tailplane might be salvable and the metal propeller would probably be able to be used again for the replacement. The aircraft canopy fitted to the replica aircraft was an original from the factory in Britain. The club spokesman said that inquiries would be made to see whether another could be obtained.

Further forms of security would be considered for the second replica aircraft, he said.
