Lyttelton reclamation draws objections
The Lyttelton Harbour Board’s proposed reclamation at Gladstone Pier and the No. 1 Breastwork has drawn eight objections from Lyttelton residents.
The board made formal notification of its plan to reclaim 3.9 ha of land at the eastern end of the inner harbour several months ago. Submissions closed on September 21.
The submissions objected to the plan on four main points. They were noise disturbance, the loss of visual amenities, dust nuisance, and the expected loss of darkness because of lighting used on the project. One submission suggesting that a public meeting be organised to discuss the planned project drew a
response from a recent town-planning committee meeting of the Lyttelton Borough Council.
The committee felt that a public meeting would be of value to the board for public relations purposes. It recommended that the council offer its assistance to the board in organising a meeting. The council has supported the board's project after agreeing to noise control standards which would apply to the construction, and use of the reclaimed area. Before work can begin, the board will require approval for the project from the New Zealand Ports Authority. Water supply
The works committee has recommended that the coun-
cil apply for the right to supply electricity to the borough’s new water supply well at Dyers Road, Bromley, which is in the Municipal Electricity Department’s lines licence area.
the North Canterbury Catchment Board and Regional Water Board recently granted the council the right to take up to 10,000 cubic metres of water a day from the well.
The Christchurch City Council objection to the application was disallowed by the board on the ground that there would be no detrimental depletion of the aquifer. The City Council had objected because the well was close to one of its main pumping stations in St Johns Street.
