Catalonia and Andalusia
Sir,—Stan Darling, reporting the good-will delegation to Christchurch from the city of Barcelona in Catalonia, writes that (‘You could almost hear castanets and the staccato tapping of flamenco dancers’ heels outside the Mayor’s office.” This is all very wincemaking. Flamenco’s home is the southern Spanish province of Andalusia. Catalonia has an entirely different tradition of folk music. Identifying the cultures of Basque territories with those of Spain is an insensitive inaccuracy these days; the case of Pablo Casals should remind us of that. New Zealanders might care to inform themselves better on such matters before pigeon-holing the rest of the globe so lazily. It would be a token of good will. — Yours, etc., G. ZANKER.
