Motherhood
Sir,—Feminists realise that motherhood is an aspect of women’s lives that some get great satisfaction from and som&do not. Women are individuals ano what suits one does not necessarily suit another. However, thanks to the
women’s liberation movement many New Zealand women have a greater choice of careers than their mothers did and many of us are taking advantage of it. This has also allowed many fathers to find that parenting can be something at which they can excel and enjoy. What feminists have always advocated is choices for women. Biology is not destiny. That is the essence of the United Nations convention on women — not restricting freedom but adding to it. I find it interesting that it is women who have chosen a traditional role who wish to force everyone else to do likewise and so oppose ratification. — Yours, etc., T. E. MOON. August 29, 1984.
