Juantorena retires

NZPA-Reuter Havana The Cuban runner, Alberto Juantorepa, who shot to fame by winning two gold medals at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, has officially retired from athletics, the Cuban newspaper “Granma” said yesterday. In a report from the “Friendship-84” tournament in Moscow, “Granma” said the 34-year-old middle-dis-tance runner told reporters, his winning performance in

the 800 m on Saturday was the last official race of his career. He said he would perhaps take part in a few more races, but the Moscow meeting marked his formal retirement. Juantorena was virtually unknown outside Cuba until he astonished the athletics world by winning the 400 m and'oOOm golds in Montreal. He then dominated the distances for the next three

years. But nagging injuries began to take their toll and he was forced to miss the 1980 Olympics in Moscow. The Soviet-led boycott meant he also missed this year’s games in Los Angeles. His exciting front-running style and game struggle against injury won him fans throughout the world and though he never regained his Montreal form, he remained popular.
