Six from Canterbury picked for surf test
Six Canterbury competitors and the North Beach surf boat crew have been named in a team which includes seven Olympians to represent New Zealand in the Fresh Up trans-Tasman surf life-saving test against Australia at Mt Maunganui on January 27 and 28. Peter Cox (Waikuku) and Jeff Walker (Waimairi) will compete in the board, ski and iron-man section of the competition: Lars Humer and Ricky Laing (Taylor’s Mistake) will compete in the swimmers’ . competition; Anthony Beks (South Brighton) is named as a junior swimming representative; and Anthony Doreen (South Brighton) will compete in the beach events. The North Beach surf boat crew of Steve and Dave Pipe, Mark Carrington, Dave Taylor and John Clarke, has been named en masse as a representative
in the event. Also in the team are lan Ferguson, a gold medallist at the recent Olympic games in the KI 500, the K2 500 and the K 4 1000 kayaking events: Alan Thompson, a gold medallist in the KI 1090 and K 4 1000 events; Paul McDonald a gold medallist in the K2 500 and K 4 1000; Grant Bramwell, a gold medallist in the K 4 1000 event; Ed Richard and Robbie Jenkinson who competed in the K2 1000 race and Brian Wilson, the joint coach of the Olympic kayak team.
