Women’s marathon
PA Tauranga Heather Matthews, running her first marathon, broke the race record for the Complan women’s marathon at Tauranga yesterday. Matthews, of Kerikeri, clocked two hours 47 minutes 17 seconds, cruising home almost three minutes ahead of last year’s winner, Gail Reese. The old race record was 2hr 48min 3s. The pair ran together until
the 23km mark when Matthews/surged to the lead. She was increasing her advantage at the finish. A Japanese runner, Minoru Muramoto, finished third in 2hr 52min 38s. Matthews, formerly Heather Thomson, was a silver medallist in the women's 3000 m at the Commonwealth Games at Edmonton in 1978. She is now 38.
