Problems of running cemetery at profit
PA Auckland Putting new life into cemeteries will be one of the subjects cemetery owners and monumental masons will discuss at a conference in Auckland. Topics will range from cardboard coffins to cemetery weddings during the first international Monument Federation conference from September 9 to 14. Main New Zealand crematoria and cemetery owners will discuss the problems of running a cemetery at a profit The chairman of the Auckland Cemetery Owners and Managers' Association, Mr Haddon Speakman, said other countries could show New Zealand new attitudes to death. "In Los Angeles they have chapels in cemeteries and they have weddings in them.
They are so beautiful,” he said.
"Many people think death is not a nice thing to deal with. We want to change that thinking. There are some people who would argue it is a real blessing.” Although some people did not realise it, cemeteries were a business like any other, Mr Speakman said.
