Joint post for top Maori jobs urged

PA Wellington The role of Maori Trustee should be returned to the Secretary for Maori Affairs, according to the Maori Council. The two top jobs in the Maori Affairs Department were split by the State Services Commission last year when Dr Tamati Reedy succeeded the Secretary for Maori Affairs, Mr Kara Puketapu. At a recent meeting in Wellington, the council decided that the duties of the Trustee, Mr Bruce Robinson, should be “rightly entrusted” to Dr Reedy. It sent its proposals to the outgoing Minister of Maori Affairs, Mr Couch, and the Minister-elect, Mr Wetere.

Mr Wetere said he would like to see the commission’s reasons for splitting the roles and also hear the council’s submissions.
