Road, railway on Coast still closed

Greymouth reporter The highway and railway line at Omoto, 3km northeast of Greymouth, continue to buckle and the slumping will keep both closed for two or three days. The resident engineer of the Ministry of Works and Development at Greymouth, Mr J. P. Kerr, said that a culvert beneath the road had split and blocked and this was causing a build-up of water pressure. Excavation work will be started and a replacement culvert installed. The engineer for the Railways Corooration at Greymouth, Mr R. Bruce, said that about 80 metres of railway track were affected by the slip and its restoration hinged on the placement of the new culvert.
