Telephone noise
Sir,—Our telephone line reception in Christchurch is appalling. The high level of crackles, spluttering and general background noise is intolerable and quite unjustifiable, especially when taking into account the large operating profit made each year by the Post Office. Surely some of this excess should be channelled in the direction of upgrading antiquated telephone exchange equipment. The problem, as well as being associated with particular exchanges, also seems to be involved With lack of maintenance, because it is possible when getting a bad line to hang up, dial again, and get some improvement. I would be interested to hear what the Post Office intends to do about this problem.—Yours, etc., M. E. GRAHAM. July 5, 1984.
[The acting regional engineer of the Post Office, Mr D. S. G. Preston, replies: “I am sorry to hear that Mr Graham is having problems with his telephone service and we will do what we can to ensure that his difficulties do not continue. However, the information provided is insufficient to allow the Post Office to carry out a full investigation. I would appreciate Mr Graham calling in to £he
Regional Engineer’s Office, fourth floor, Carruca House, so that we can discuss the dates and times when poor service has been noticed.”]
