Motor-cyclists in the Square
Sir,—ln reply to Mr Bennett’s letter on the parking of motorcycles in Cathedral Square (July 16), one cannot help wondering why he is so concerned since he does not own a motor-cycle himself. There is surely a much more potent argument against having them in the Square when one considers that they are next to an hotel catering for the tourist trade. Perhaps one should consider the tourists instead of a dozen or so people who park their bikes in the Square. Many older ladies staying in the hotel are afraid to walk past the area to restaurants in Armagh Street without an escort of a male staff member. It seems to me that the only people requiring the park are a few motor-cyclists and the selfappointed traffic warden, Mr Bennett. — Yours, etc., J. STIRLAND-MITCHELL. July 18, 1984.
Sir,—J. K. Bennett has forgotten that not all businesses in the northeast area of Cathedral Square, particularly the accommodation hotel, close at 5 p.m. The use of the. parking spaces by motor-cyclists limits legitimate users to the loading zone 10-minute park — avidly policed by J. K. Bennett — penalising guests and management alike. If, as alleged, unhindered parking from 3 p.m. is fact, perhaps the motor-cyclists and J. K. Bennett could remove themselves at all times, extending the privilege to these who would appreciate parking without fear of receiving a traffic violation notice. The City Council could provide the cinema and the hotel with a permanent park, between the hours of 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., for use of management and guests. — Yours, etc., K. DAVEY. July 18, 1984.
