Individual freedom

Sir,—The ancient Greeks originated the concept of individual freedom, and found its highest fulfilment in ‘the ethos of hedone. Homosexual feeling and expression were especially important. It is entirely wrong of Varian J. Wilson (July 16) to claim that the “gay lobby” has corrupted “the whole idea of human rights and individual freedom.” On the contrary, it is the Judeo-Christian Church, which, for nearly 20 centuries, has done precisely that. Accustomed to perceive things upside down, Mr Wilson experiences vertigo when they are presented right way up. He exhibits ' the puritan’s mortal fear that someone, somewhere, somehow may experience a moment’s pleasure. His assertion that the Arabs have a completely inhuman society is utterly absurd. I lived among them for several years during World War 11, and their humanity, intelligence, beauty and grace were a continual delight. Their largeness of spirit and faculty for fellowship contrast with Varian J. Wilson’s disposition.— Yours, etc.,

PAUL MALING. July 18, 1984.
