Hereford show, sale results
An even line-up of animals did not ease the task for judges Mr Don Goodall of Braxton, Mossbum, and Mr Frank Light, Waingawa, at the National Hereford Show and Sale held recently.
The sale did not reach the heights of the record price $23,000 achieved at the 1983 sale, with the top price for a two-year-old bull being $BOOO and averaging $4200.
The supreme champion Hereford, Merrylea Diplo- , mat, exhibited by Mr E. D. McKerchar of the Merrylea Stud, Cave, South Canterbury, was purchased by the Maungahina Stud for $7600. The reserve supreme champion Hereford, Hui-Hui Junta, exhibited by G. L. and E. A. Dunster, of Hawarden, North Canterbury, was sold to Mr Walter Mountain of the Te Puna Hereford Stud for $BOOO.
A top-priced yearling heifer was purchased by W. E. Guy Trust for $lBOO from Hukaroa (Messrs Vic and Peter Hansen) and a 62-day-old heifer calf was bought by Australian interests for $5400 from the Nenthorn Stud of James Harvie and Co. Ltd.
Measuring of all animals was completed prior to the show and sale with Merrylea Diplomat showing up well with its vital statistics. It was the second tallest at 138 cm, the heaviest at 806 kg, recorded the largest area of rib eye at 129 square centimetres and a fat cover measurement of 6mm. The show results were as follows:
