The A.N.Z.U.S. debate
Sir, — Obviously United States warships would need access to our ports in the event of a defence emergency; but it is absurd for Mr Shultz to suggest that access of certain ships for rest and recreation is essential to the alliance. — Yours, etc., DAVID W. COLLINS. July 17, 1984. Sir, — Is New Zealand to remain an independent nation or is it to have its internal policy determined by a foreign power? We have seen United States interference during the election, and now threats after it. We have seen C.I.A. poljfical involvement
throughout the world documented, and its part in overthrowing elected Governments documented. We have seen United States ports refuse entry to the warships they expect us to permit to enter our ports. Are we going to help the United States maintain its record of fighting its wars on other nations’ soils? — Yours, etc., B. ROBERTS. July 18, 1984.
