British shaken
NZPA-Reuter London Buildings shook, china crashed, dogs barked and people fell out of bed yesterday when an earthquake rumbled across Wales and north-west England. Two tremors, each lasting about five seconds, sent breakfasting Britons running into the streets but there were no reports of injuries, police said. Officials at the British Geological Survey in Edinburgh said that it was
Britain’s biggest earthquake for 20 years. “I was having a wash when all of a sudden the floor started to vibrate,” David Payne, of Rhos-on-Sea, Wales, told NZPAReuter. “There was a rumbling noise and the walls started shaking.” The police said their lines were jammed by thousands of people reporting chimney pots tumbling, beds sliding about, cupboards rattling, and some brief power cute caused by falling cables.
