Manukau Harbour ‘polluted’
PA Auckland Pollution damage to Manukau Harbour might be irreparable, a biologist told the Waitangi Tribunal yesterday. Ms Stella Penny, a specialist in frteh water ecology and biological assessment of water pollution, gave evidence on behalf of the Tainui people, who claim that developments on the harbour and the Waikato River are ruining their natural heritage.
The tribunal, comprising Chief Judge Durie (chairman), Sir Graham Latimer, and Mr Paul Temm, Q.C., is conducting a hearing at the Makaurau marae at Mangere. Ms Penny said that enclosed sheltered harbours, although highly productive in seafood, were sensitive to input from the surrounding land. There was a high input of solids, including heavy metal, into Manukau Harbour, she said.
