C.E.R. investigation
PA Auckland A consignment of consumer goods has been seized by customs officers at Auckland Airport for an alleged breach of the Closer Economic Relations agreement with Australia. The Collector of Customs in Auckland, Mr Michael Howley, said the seizing was the latest in a series of investigations by his'department against importers whom, he claimed were trying to evade the C.E.R. rules. He said that the depart-
ment was uncovering such moves “reasonably regularly.” There had been about seven or eight seizings, including three big ones, said Mr Howley. “The Customs Department gave the Government an undertaking that it had the capability and the capacity to police the matter thoroughly, and there has been evidence of that by the number of detections made.” He declined to give details of the latest seizing.
