Visit to Soviet churches

A Christchurch prison chaplain, the Rev. Don Prince, will be one of 20 New Zealanders making a tour of churches in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe next month. The tour has been organised by the National Council of Churches and will be led by the council’s Auckland regional secretary, Dr Alan Brash. Group members have been chosen by Churches in the council and include lay people and

ministers. The trip was to establish contacts with churches in Eastern Europe to understand their situation and their needs at first hand, said Mr Prince. A lot of confusing information existed about what it was like to be a Christian in Eastern Europe, but the group hoped to go with “eyes and ears open,” he said. After a three-day orienta-

tion in Geneva they will spend 10 days in the Soviet Union. From there they will travel to Hungary, Rumania, and Bulgaria, spending a week in each country, visiting churches of. the three main denominations . there — Orthodox, Baptist, and Catholic. Mr Prince will leave New Zealand today to visit New York before joining the group in Geneva on August 1.
