Export of coal up

Wellington reporter New Zealand coal exports should reach 300,000 tonnes this year for the first time, about 20 per cent more than last year, according to the Minister of Energy, Mr Birch. He said that export contracts with Japanese buyers had just been ratified. The coal price negotiated was SUSS3 a tonne (which represented about $NZ85.83 a tonne) about $2 down on 1983 prices, he said. This was satisfactory in the circumstances because international coal prices had fallen about SUS2.SO to SUS 3 a tonne in the period. Because of currency fluctuations, Mr Birch said, the return ger tonne' in New Zealand dollars would be

about the same as last year. The sales just negotiated would be worth about SNZ24 million a year and would ensure continuity of production from the Buller coalfield.
