Character actor dies

NZPA-AP Los Angeles The character actor, John Marley, who made his first film in 1941 and had roles in such movies as “Love Story,” “Cat Ballou” and “The Godfather,” has died. He was 76. Marley died at CedarsSinai Medical Centre where he had undergone a coronary by-pass operation on May 8, said a spokeswoman, Ms Peggy Shaff. The white-haired, craggily handsome actor appeared in more than two dozen films, but first drew notice in John Cassavete’s “Faces.” His role as a lonely middle-aged husband earned him a best actor award at the Venice film festival for the 1968 film. He was nominated for an Oscar for “Love Story,” in which he played Ali Macgraw’s father. He also appeared in “I Want To Live,” “W. C. Fields and Me,” “Hooper Threshold” and “Tribute,” among others.
