Kiwi-house fund given boost
The Orana Park kiwihouse appeal received a further boost yesterday with a $l7OO cheque presented by the Minister of Tourism, Mr Talbot. Mr Talbot handed over the Tourism and Publicity Department’s contribution for the $70,000 kiwi house. The Minister visited Christchurch yesterday to inspect the developments at McLean’s Island by lessees of land from the North Canterbury Catchment Board, which include Orana Park Zoo.
At a Catchment Board lunch for Mr Talbot, he praised the initiative of the board in developing McLean’s Island as a recreational area.
This work fitted in with the promotion of New Zealand overseas as one of the world’s great outdoor adventure holiday destinations.
Promoting tourism was “a top priority in our Government’s development strategy,” he said. Mr Talbot was told of plans by the Catchment Board to build a loop road around the McLean’s Island area.
Then he was taken on a bus tour of the recreational facilities, with Catchment Board members, staff and guests. The visit ended at Orana Park with the presentation of the cheque to the park director. Mr Paul Garland.
