New project would encourage tourists

A kiwi house at Orana Park would encourage tourists to visit the attraction, said the Minister of Tourism, Mr Talbot, yesterday. He visited the park to give $l7OO from the Tourist and Publicity Department toward the kiwi house project. “This project will create a unique tourist attraction for the South Island but just as importantly it will establish a fine facility for viewing our most famous indigenous bird,” said Mr Talbot.

“The success of kiwi houses in the North Island show that both New Zealanders and visitors to this country display a in-

terest in the kiwi. "Therefore, it is all the more important that South Islanders have this opportunity on their own doorstep,” he said. New Zealand was promoted overseas as “the great escape” back to nature and scenic attractions, tastefully supplied with facilities.

“The leadership and marketing skills of my department and the tourist industry are now giving priority to a sophisticated marketing campaign in our overseas markets to promote New Zealand as one of the world’s great outdoor adventure holiday destinations,” Mr Talbot said’
