Landlords’ experience ‘should be known’

Parliamentary reporter More needs to be known about private residential landlords and their experience with rental housing, according to the chairman of the National Housing Commission, Mr E. Robertson.

He was commenting on a report done for the commission on how to boost rental housing(“The Press,” May 18). The report proposed incentives to boost private sector involvement in the rental housing market. It looked at both incentives and factors restraining the provision of rental housing.

Mr Robertson said there had been considerable speculation about the amount of private rental accommodation available and the commission had felt it appropriate to consider if an increase was needed and how it could be achieved.

Very little data was available, but the researchers — the Christchurch consultants, Brown, Copeland and Company, Ltd, had found enough to be able to make the assumptions on which their recommendations were based. The consultants had felt there was a decline in the

size of the private rental sector, and that there were disincentives which restricted any chance for growth.
