Car fee rise criticised
The Government was desperately searching for ways to reduce its deficit and increasing car registration fees was one way of doing so, said the president of the New Zealand Party, Mr Malcolm McDonald, yesterday. The $7.35 increase completely contradicted the Government’s policy of holding prices, he said. With about 1.9 million registered vehicles in New Zealand, the Government would be able to take another $l3 million.
“How can it justify this increase of 13 per cent when it claims to have reduced inflation to about 3 per cent? A car is not a luxury, it is a necessity, so this increase, in effect, will wipe out the $8 a week wage rise that people have received,” said Mr McDonald.
