The Lord’s Prayer

Sir,—To V. H. Anderson, when I talk of “modernising,” I mean something far deeper than tinkering around with language or ritual — in fact, I do not like painting over rust like modernising the language of the Bible. If a message is not getting through, one can blame the messenger or the message, but scarcely the recipient — a principle of teaching. Religion was made for man, not man for religion. As an example, where in the Bible is there a prohibition against nuclear war, or for that matter any sort of war? — Yours, etc., VERNON WILKINSON. May 15, 1984.
