A.N.Z.U.S. Pact

Sir, — T. R. Loudon (May 14) is obviously living in the pre-nuclear age. His thinking is still in terms of “goodies” and “baddies.” The only real enemy today is nuclear weaponry that threatens to destroy us all. Mr Loudon talks of the Soviet Union’s “persistent use of military power, espionage and world-wide subversion.” But why should the Americans have a monopoly on aggression and military interference? They continue to support corrupt dictatorships all over the world. We have not long returned after three years working in the United States, and in our opinion, New Zealand has as much to fear from United States imperialism as Russian. The spread of American culture, with all its violence, extremes, false priorities and worship of the dollar, is one of the worst things happening today. Let us get out of A.N.Z.U.S. and preserve ourselves and our way of life before it is too late. — Yours, etc DIANE LAWRYANDERSON. May 16, 1984. Sir, — T. R. Loudon advocated trade embargoes against the Soviet Union (May 14). Such action would seriously inflame super-Power tensions, let alone hurt the West economically. In the United States, however, there is a movement — aptly called the Holocaust Lobby — that does propose this sort of action in its lobbying for the end of the world. It continues to press an already-extremist Reagan Administration to the brink of war. Meantime, as; William M. Arkin, director of the arms race and

nuclear weapons project at the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, points out in the “Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists,” March, 1984, the Administration’s strategy is that “the United States can best prepare for global warfare, which the Administration thinks is inevitable, by positioning its forces to strike at Soviet vulnerabilities.” Promotion of a Soviet threat is thus all part of the Reagan Administration’s plan for the holocaust. — Yours, etc., D.
