Big wash ends hospital dispute

A backlog of dirty linen from Christchurch public hospitals was cleared at the week-end after staff at the Canterbury Hospital Board’s central laundry ended a 10day overtime ban on Friday. Staff worked on Friday evening and all day Saturday to clean the linen, which was ready for packing and distribution this morning, said the board’s deputy chief executive, Mr Bill Watson, yesterday.

It was a verv successful week-end’s work, the only problem arising when one of the washing machines broke down at 3 p.m. on Saturday, he said. The staff agreed to lift the ban after being told that negotiations on staffing levels at the laundry would resume this morning. Linen had to be rationed at some hospitals last week because of the ban and some non-urgent patient admissions were cancelled.
