Speed limits

Sir,—Some of your correspondents have been incorrectly blaming speed as the major cause of road deaths because of what they think would be the case rather than what is actually the case. A recent extensive survey proves that the number of accidents per kilometre decreases as speed increases,, rather than the opposite. Although one may be fooled into thinking that lower average speed means fewer accidents, this is not borne out by the facts. On this basis, if the authorities are sincere in their desire to reduce this country’s road toll then they should urgently increase the speed limits. — Yours, L. J. BRAWLEY. May 2, 1984.
