Nuclear arms

Sir, — Miss Ruth Richardson’s call for moral leadership in arms control is commendable. Progress on disarmament has indeed been “abysmal,” and so has her party’s contribution. From Mr Taiboys’ immortal: “You might as well ask for a devil-free zone” (as a nuclearfree zone) in 1975 to a reluctant agreement a few months later to examine the subject, the National Party attitude has been one of scorn for local initiatives. Inviting nuclear vessels to tie up in our ports is not keeping New Zealand nuclear weapons-free, nor is it fulfilling our obligations under the “Nuclear non-proliferation treaty.”

Signatories are committed to halting the spread of nuclear weapons and this, Miss Richardson’s party, has failed to do by hosting nuclear vessels almost certainly nucleararmed. Scorn for local nuclear weapons-free zones speaks worlds for the National Party attitude to grassroots initiatives. Government from the top is seemingly more acceptable. — Yours, etc.,

PETER STOCKER. May 3, 1984.
