Ranger Globe in form at Addington trial

By

JEFF SCOTT

Ranger Globe, last season’s four-year-old trotter of the year, looked to be nearing his best for the Autumn Trotting Handicap at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday with a winning run at the Addington trials yesterday. The Bye Bye Song gelding, which has missed most of his season through injury, made a fresh start at Addington on Easter Saturday, making ground late in a fast-run intermediate class trot to finish seventh.

He looked improved as a result of that run yesterday. After settling three back on the outer, Ranger Globe swept round to the lead at the 600 m and was still travelling well at the finish, two lengths on top in 3min 30.6 s for the 2600 m. He was timed over his last mile in 2min 7.15, his closing 800 m in Imin 1.35, and his final 400 m in 30.75, in cool southerly conditions. If he continues to thrive, he is likely to tilt at the $55,000 Row Cup at Alexandra Park in just over two weeks time.

Game Greg, a race rival of Ranger Globe making a fresh start on Saturday, was a sound second after beginning well and settling in the third line. Lady Sadie, Novander and Zebec, other candidates for the first leg of the T.AJB. treble, made ground, to finish next. Duplex Hanover, which is unlikely to gain re-entry in the Lantana Lodge Ladies Mile, finished best after settling fourth in the C3-C9 Pacers Heat in 3min 31.7 s (2600 m the closing 400 m in 29.25.

Castle Del, handy throughout, fought on for second, half a length in front of Richina (30m) and Ansett (50m), which both

fought on late. Formal Fella, last at the 600 m, ran on strongly to finish fifth. Daisy Duke which has no race this week, led over the last 1700 m to win the C2 Pacers heat, taking time honours for the day of 3min 27.85. He cleared out over the closing stages to win by four lengths, pacing his final 400 m in a sharp 29.55. Blue Water, one of the fancied runners in the D.B. Export Flying Fillies Stakes, ran on solidly from four back on the inner to get up for second two lengths ahead of Rapid FeDa, three back on the inner to the straight which fought on.

The John Brandon New Zealand Derby winner, Naval Officer, a leading chance for the Free Holmes Mobile Stakes, missed the start yesterday and ran on smoothly after settling three back on the outer to finish fourth.

Naval Officer and his two-year-old stablemate, Phar Lord, returned south to Edendale briefly last week, but will now be kept going for racing in Canterbury over the next month. Phar Lord, which will contest the Second Standardbred Sires’ Produce Stakes Heat on Saturday, was successful in his juvenile heat yesterday in a leisurely 2min 46.75, for the 200 m, the last 400 m in a quick 29.45.

Bold Guest was a narrow winner of the second two-year-old heat in a slower 2tnin 53.2 s over the same distance by a nose, holding out Westburn King, which trailed the winner over the last 1200 m.

A winner at Invercargill in January, Bold Guest, joined Colin de Fillippi’s Ladbrooks team after finishing sixth in the Welcome Stakes on Easter Saturday.

Seduction, preparing for the $15,000 New Zealand Oaks next Wednesday, led over the last 1200 m of her Cl heat to win well by there parts of a length in 3min 30.3 s (2600 m Results: —
