Sunnier, drier, warmer

April was usually dry, warm, and sunny this year. A total of 194 sunshine hours were recorded —44 more than the April average. Maximum temperatures were about a degree above average and on eight occasions daytime temperatures exceeded 20 degrees Celsius. The highest maximum was 26 deg C recorded on April 7. Only 12mm of rainfall

was recorded —44 mm less than the average, and the lowest monthly figure since February, 1981, when Hmm was recorded. Since rainfall records were established in Christchurch 89 years ago, it has been one of the lowest April totals; drier months occurred in 1904, 1943, and 1979 when Hmm were recorded. The lowest total was 6mm in 1910. Rainfall at the airport totalled

12mm, the third lowest since records began there in 1944. The highest daily rainfall of 5.5 mm fell on April 8 accompanied by a vigorous cold front, thunderstorms, and hail. In spite of the low rainfall in April, a lot of rain in the preceding months has meant that 234 mm of rain has fallen so far this year compared with 185 mm for the same period last year.
