Governor’s Bay services meeting

The Mount Herbert County Council will not make a decision on water and sewerage scheme options for Governor’s Bay until it has received more information on the proposals. At its April meeting recently, the council discussed a detailed report prepared by a Dunedin engineering firm, E. R. Garden and Partners, Ltd, which outlined water reticulation and sewerage treatment for Governor’s Bay. It also considered cost estimates for the supply of domestic water to Governor’s Bay, prepared by Royds Sutherland McLeay, Ltd. The council will make a decision on the schemes after a public meeting has been held to discuss the proposals with Governor’s Bay residents. The county engineer, Mr

J. H.. Christensen, said a pamphlet detailing options for both schemes would be distributed to residents before the meeting.. Mr Christensen expected the meeting to be held within six weeks. Councillors and staff will meet representatives of the Dunedin firm on May 9 to discuss the sewerage and water supply proposals. ‘Beautiful N.Z.’ A joint application by the Governor’s Bay Community Association and the council for a Beautiful New Zealand Scheme project has been approved by the Ministry of Works and Development. The application proposes large-scale revegetation to promote the recovery of native bush covering about 45ha in the Sugar Loaf scenic reserve. The area is situated in

upper Dyers Valley. The Sugar Loaf reserve is in the county but it is administered by the Christchurch City Council. Funding for the scheme will be available next financial year. Cr D. W. Collins said he expected planting to begin in the winter of 1985. The planting programme was expected to take about three years, he said. A proposed steering committee for the scheme involves representatives ,of the county council, community association, the botany division of the D.S.I.R, the City Council, the Summit Road Reserve Society and the ministry. The scheme will also be subject to arrangements with a landowner who leases part of the land to the City Council.
