Chemical disposal approved

PA New Plymouth Ivon Watkins-Dow, Ltd, can now discharge chemical waste into groundwater at Omata. A two-year water right has been granted at a special meeting of the Taranaki Catchment Commission at Stratford.

The right, which will expire on June 1, 1986, allows the company to discharge waste leaching into groundwater from two existing underground chemical dump sites. The wastes will be dammed and diverted with all the contaminated groundwater contained and treated. The application by the company went to a special tribunal hearing in January where there were four objections. The company had applied for the water right last August. Late in 1982, a seepage was noticed on the high tide foreshore near the mouth of the Wairekanui Stream. The seepage was shown to contain phenoxy herbicide constituents derived from the waste-chemical landfills above the beach. The fills were established by Ivon Watkins-Dow in 1975 and 1976.
