Dollar-for-dollar subsidy for flood
PA Wellington Southlanders will receive a dollar-for-dollar subsidy, up to $l.B million, from the Government for flood relief. The subsidy comes after $1 million already given by the Government to the Southland flood relief committee. The Prime Minister, Sir Robert Muldoon, has said that the subsidy would “just about meet, with what they have got, the claims that have been made for losses by all kinds of people.” He said that some houses
which were to be shifted or could not be used again, were a special problem. “We are going to talk to the people in Invercargill this week about that, and the local members of Parliament, and deal with that perhaps next Monday. “We cannot make final decisions in that area until we have had the opportunity of talking to the local members for, advice and the (Invercargill) City Council for an indication of what they are prepared to do to help.”
