Queen wanted by most polled
NZPA London Most people questioned in an opinion poll do not want the Queen to abdicate. The poll, conducted by Market and Opinion Research International for the “Daily Star,” found that 59 per cent of those questioned thought she should remain Queen as long as possible. Thirty-two per cent said she should abdicate now, and 9 per cent said they did not know.
Asked whether ‘ Prince Charles was ready to become King, 67 per cent said yes, 26 per cent no and 7 per cent did not know. The poll also revealed that 90 per cent of people agree that the Royal Family does a lot to promote Britain abroad, and 68 per cent agree that Britain would have less influence in world affairs without the Queen, and without the Monarchy Britain would be less stable politically.
Seventy-seven per cent of people also said that Britain would be worse off if the Monarchy were abolished, 5 per cent that it would be better off.
Sixteen per cent said it would make no difference and 2 per cent did not know. According to the “Daily Star,” 1077 adults, aged over 18 in 54 constituency sampling points throughout Britain were polled.
