Manslaughter charge
PA Tauranga A man has been charged with manslaughter following the death of a Wellington woman during a raft trip on the Rangitikei River last year. Stephen William Jackson, aged 25, of Omokoroa, near Tauranga, a recreation officer, then employed by Educational Tours Unlimited, of Ohakune, appeared in the District Court at Tauranga last week on the charge. He has been remanded to the District Court at Taihape for depositions on August 3. Jackson is charged that, being the raft operator in
charge of a group of tourists, he omitted to observe his duty to them by taking them on a raft trip when the river was flooded and in a dangerous condition. The trip took place on October 23 last year. Miss Teremoana Aupini, aged 25, single, a clerk, drowned during the trip. Detective Sergeant R. R. Higginson, of the Taihape C. 1.8., said yesterday that he believed Jackson moved to Omokoroa soon after the accident. Jackson was no longer employed by the raft company. Police had been investigating the accident for six months.
