Recycling buildings

Sir,—The recycling of building materials (“The Press,” April 24, page 22) may be a type of recycling, but recycling of buildings means giving new life to old buildings by modifying buildings to

suit new purposes. In appropriate cases the refitting of interiors of buildings is required. Sculpture and works of art do enhance buildings, for example the Christchurch Town Hall and the A.M.P. building’s foyer. The refuse by Mr Don McAra of stone from the old National Bank building is a better fate for it than the wholesale dumping of stone from the Bank of New Zealand, A.M.P. and Dalgetys, which is what happened. Cannibalism of buildings is, however, very different from conservation of them. Your readers’ attention is drawn to page 25 of the same issue, and the “City’s unattractive side” article about San Francisco. — Yours, etc., J. R. ALLISON. April 24, 1984.
