Chris Lewis advances
NZPA-AFP Aix-en Provence, France Chris Lewis, of New Zealand, beat Rolf Gehring, of West Germany in the first round of the men’s Golden Racket tennis competition in Aix-en-Provence yesterday. Lewis, ranked twentieth in the world, beat the German in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. A French-based Austra-
lian, Trevor Allen, swept aside an American Davis Cup player, Brian Gottfried, 6-0, 6-0. There were wins also for two other Australians. A former world junior No. 1, Pat Cash, struggled to a three sets win over HansDieter Beutel, of West Germany, while Wally Masur outplayed Jacob Hlasek, of Switzerland, in straight sets.
