Best badminton reserved to last

The best badminton of the Anzac tournament came, surprisingly, right at the end in the final event at the Skellerup Hall yesterday. Surprisingly because the four players involved in the mixed doubles final. Peter and Nigel Skelt, Alison Ross and Jane Clarke, had been involved in a tiring four days of intense training, as well as competing in the tournament over the last two days. Yet the four produced an entertaining contest, with Nigel Skelt and Miss Clarke picking up their second titles with a 15-14, 15-10 win. It was a result none would have predicted when Peter Skelt and Miss Ross raced to a 13-2 lead in the opening game. However, on their next eight serves, the pair could manage just one point as Nigel Skelt and Miss Clarke battled and scraped their way back. Indeed, the only time the fair led in the game was

when thev won game point at 15-14. ’

The second game had fewer long rallies as the players regularly took time out to gulp in more air.

The singles titles went to Nigel Skelt and Colleen Hellyer. Skelt overcame a determined Prasanna Gulasekharam to win in straight games. Gulasekharam varied his play but was guilty of not capitalising on winning opportunities in the second game. Results.— Men’s singles—Quarterfinals: N. Skelt beat A. Duckmanton. 15-4. 10-15, 15-10, G.
