World records tumble at paraplegic games
PA Hamilton The sixteenth New Zealand paraplegic and physically disabled championships ended on Monday with an amazing 45 new world records.
Athletes from Australia, Switzerland and throughout New Zealand spent Easter week-end in Hamilton competing for numerous national titles.
Track and field events, swimming, archery, dartchery, basketball, weightlifting, and pistol shooting were contested by athletes disabled with blindness, paralysis, cerebral palsy, and various other disabilities.
Athletes competing included 14 members of the New Zealand team to compete at the world championships later this year. A championships spokesman, Bruce Tocker, said that the presence of the New Zealand team lifted the games and was responsible for so many world records being shattered. He said the team’s standard of performance was particularly high because the athletes had been training for the international event.
Performances especially notable during the championships came from R. Courtney in the 100 m paraplegic track event, G. Condon in the 1500 m paraplegic event, R.
