Rachel Wilson tennis winner

Rachel Wilson thumbed her nose at the seedings by winnings the 18 years girls’ singles at the Coca Cola Easter junior tennis tournament at Wilding Park on Tuesday.

Although ranked only third in the field, the tenacious Elmwood girl hit her drives firmly and deep to topple the second seeded Andrea Barlow in a three-set final. Previously Miss Wilson had beaten Vicki Ratana, the No. 1 seed.

However, the Ratana family gained its revenge when Vicki’s younger sister, Lani, combined with Joanna Lake to overthrow Rachel Wilson and Jillian Lavender — the top seeds — in the girls’ doubles final.

Amanda Trail and Andrew Batie justified their top seed-

ings by winning their respective singles titles in the 14 years division, and Jeffrey Brightwell (16 years) added the boys’ doubles to his earlier singles success. His doubles partner was Brett Jenkins (Otago), and another outside winner was Jennifer Morris (Southland), who beat the top-seeded MaryJane Burke in the 16 years girls’ singles final.
