N.Z. cycling tour ends

A 3300 kilometre cycling tour of New Zealand ended at Christchurch on Saturday for a Japanese man, Takuji Tiino, aged 27. A university graduate, he worked for more than three years to raise the finance for his trip which will ultimately take in 43 countries and involve nearly 44,000 km.

He arrived at Auckland in February after cycling 13,000 km around Japan in preparation for the world trip. His bicycle was tailor-made and tyres were suplied by the National Electric Company of Japan.

The company gave him 20 tyres, but those used in New Zealand never failed him once. He praised the standard of roads and added that the beautiful scenery en-

couraged him to extend his trip here. He carries with him a letter of introduction from Lions Clubs of Japan, and in Ashburton he stayed with Mr R. G. Herridge. He has stayed with Lion members in Pleasant Point and Tekapo on the way north.

His planning for a trip of nearly three years, involved 60 kilometres a day to allow for sightseeing, but on some days in New Zealand he had done more than 100 km.

He leaves Christchurch this week for Australia and a trip across the southern part of that country.
