Forged money floods Britain
NZPA London Forged £5O notes worth millions of pounds have flooded Britain, the police warned.
Five men were helping police inquiries at Southend in connection with the passing of forged £5O notes there.
Three were detained on Good Friday after the police set up roadblocks in their hunt for the distribution gang. A car containing them was involved in a crash at Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, and they were arrested.
More £5O notes were found at premises on the seafront and in the High
Street area on Saturday and two more men were detained.
A police spokesman said that a number of men would probably appear in court at Southend after the holiday.
He said the face value of the bogus £5O notes ran into millions of pounds. Forged notes had turned up in London and in counties as far apart as Tyne and Wear and a small number of the forged notes had turned up in the west of Scotland.
A Bank of England spokesman said that* all genuine notes had a watermark and a security thread. He did not wish to comment further.
