Coach granted visitor’s permit
An American roller skating coach who lost his Christchurch job last week was granted a visitor’s permit yesterday allowing him to stay in New Zealand another two months.
Mr Randy Gray had been told by the Labour Department that he would have to leave New Zealand by the end of next week if he did not get a visitor’s permit. His six-month work permit expired on March 21. He had been brought to New Zealand on a 12-month contract by Rollerland, Ltd, to coach at its rink in
Wainoni Road. He was dismissed last week after working for six months, Mr Gray said. Because he no longer had a job, he was not granted another work permit. With the visitor’s permit he would not be allowed to coach. Instead, he would spend the two months with friends and in travelling in New Zealand, Mr Gray said. The owner of the rink, Mr Paul Rushton, said last week that Mr Gray was no longer employed because his visa had expired. He had not really been dismissed.
