Consecration set for June 6
The Catholic Coadjutor Bishop of Christchurch, the Rev. Denis Hanrahan, will be consecrated on June 6. The consecration would take place at the Christchurch Town Hall, which had been chosen because it could accommodate 2600 people compared with 700 people at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, said the diocesan director of communications, the Rev. Ray Schmack, yesterday. The venue was also preferred because Father Hanrahan’s duties as coadjutor bishop meant he would not occupy the Bishop’s chair in the Cathedral.
The 90-minute ceremony will be presided over by the Catholic Bishop of Christ-
church, the Most Rev. B. P. Ashby, assisted by the six Catholic Bishops of New Zealand. A feature of the consecration Mass will be a massed choir from parishes and Catholic schools in the diocese, conducted by the director of music at the Cathedral, Mr Don Whelan. Father Hanrahan will end his duties as parish priest of Bishopdale at Easter. A new priest for the parish has not yet been appointed.
