Receiving of stolen goods admitted
A man who was to have been tried by a jury in the District Court yesterday on six charges of receiving stolen television sets and electrical equipment valued at $7288, pleaded guilty to the offences before the scheduled trial began. Judge Fraser remanded George Elias Van Der Veen, aged 33, a freezing worker (Mr D. I. Jones), in custody to April 19 for a probation report and sentence. The offences occurred between October, 1980, and March 12, this year. The property received by Van Der Veen comprised three colour television sets,
a stereo system and various items of stereo equipment, and a video recorder. The defendant originally had been committed for trial on five receiving charges but the sixth charge, of receiving the video recorder, was added yesterday, and admitted. Mr D. J. L. Saunders, who opposed bail oh behalf of the police, said that Van Der Veen had committed the offence of receiving the video recorder on March 2, the same day as he appeared for a pre-trial conference to set the date for his scheduled trial on the other five charges.
