Cable system

NZPA-AFP Taipei A construction and maintenance agreement for a projected Singapore-Hong Kong-Taiwan submarine cable system has been signed by Taiwan’s Direc-torate-General of Telecommunications. The submarine cable system is 2313 nautical miles long, of two segments — Taiwan-Hong Kong and Hong Kong-Singapore — with a total investment of about $229.5 million, accord-

ing to the agreement signed in Taipei. The whole system should be completed before the end of 1985.

A spokesman said the project would replace the existing Taiwan-Hong Kong system, which had already exceeded its life-span. The cable to Singapore will also link into the SouthEast Asia cable system, the South-East Asia-Middle East-Western Europe cable system, and the Australia-Indonesia-Singapore cable system.
