Rolleston case continues
The plaintiffs continued their evidence on the improvements they had carried out on the Crown properties they leased at Rolleston, in the case being heard before Mr Justice Cook in the High Court yesterday. Eighteen tenants of Crown properties are suing the Attorney-General, Mr McLay, for breach of contract and other breaches in relation to the proposed sale of blocks of land by public auction.
It is claimed by the tenants that the Government has gone back on its word in selling the land by
auction as they had been given to understand that they would be given preference to purchase the properties they leased.
The land involved was acquired by the last Labour Government to set up a new town at Rolleston, but the scheme was abandoned when the National Government was elected.
Messrs C. B. Atkinson, Q.C., and J. D. Scott appear for the 18 plaintiffs and Mr G. K. Panckhurst and Miss K. P. McDonald for the Attorney-General, who is being sued as the registered proprietor of Crown lands in New Zealand.
