One extra Frenchman
PA Wellington France’s naming of 27 players to tour New Zealand in June took the rugby union by surprise. A tour of eight matches usually involves 26 players, with the N.Z.R.F.U. meeting the costs for them and three officials. “We will be politely asking what’s going on,” said Mr Blazey. “We haven’t had official notification of the
make-up of the French team, so we don’t know what the reasons are for naming 27 players.” Speculation on the personnel in the touring side suggested the extra player had been named to cover the possible loss of the flanker, Jean-Luc Joinel, who has been refused leave by his employers, but who is trying to talk them into having a change of mind.
